Porsche 911 GT3 R Hybrid: Formula 1 driver Nico Hülkenberg tested the orange and white liveried racing 911 on the Nürburgring Nordschleife

Nico Hülkenberg
Source – Porsche Media Friday, 23 April 2010
The Porsche 911 GT3 R Hybrid has passed its most unusual task by now with flying colours in preparation for the Nürburgring 24 hour race on 15/16 May.  AT&T Williams Formula 1 pilot Nico Hülkenberg tested the orange and white liveried racing 911 on the Nürburgring Nordschleife in the lead up to the third round of the VLN Long Distance Championship Hulkenberg was enthusiastic with many aspects of the experience: “Great car, fascinating technology and an incomparable track,” concluded Hülkenberg.

http://www.youtube.com/v/x2dP_XhGzUg&hl=en_US&fs=1&color1=0x3a3a3a&color2=0x999999&hd=1&border=1

The Formula 1 driver completed three laps at his Nordschleife debut in a race car and was able to get an idea of the perfect interplay of all the hybrid system components. “This test was great fun. I’m impressed with how well the hybrid system works in the Porsche,” said Hülkenberg. One of the components of the hybrid system, the flywheel generator installed inside the cockpit, was designed and manufactured by Williams Hybrid Power following Porsche’s specifications.

“This circuit is unique, you can’t compare it to any other track in the world. This is certainly not the last time I’ll drive here,” said Hülkenberg, who has driven only single seaters on the race circuit. “Surprisingly, in the slow corners, the 911 is not far off a Formula 1 car. The mechanical grip is impressive.” In the 911 GT3 Hybrid, two electric motors at the front axle developing 60 kW (82 hp) each supplement the 353 kilowatt (480 hp) four litre flat six at the rear. Instead of the batteries used in hybrid road cars, an electrical flywheel power generator fitted in the cockpit beside the driver delivers energy to the electric motors.

Compared to a battery, the flywheel generator has the advantage of storing and delivering high amounts of energy considerably quicker. Thanks to its sophisticated electronic control, the innovative hybrid drive of the 911 GT3 R Hybrid automatically provides optimal efficiency at racing speed. The combination of the combustion engine and electric motors fulfils a simple objective: Less fuel consumption without compromising performance. When overtaking or accelerating out of a bend, the driver can manually override the controls by pressing the boost paddle on the steering wheel and sending energy from the charged flywheel generator to the front axle.

This additional power of 120 kilowatts is available to the driver after each charge process for approximately six to eight seconds.

Jerry Seinfeld drives Porsche Boxster Spyder

One of the admirers of the new Boxster Spyder is comedian Jerry Seinfeld, whose RSK Spyder—part of his collection of Porsches, housed in southern California—sparkles alongside its latest descendant. On entering the Bernardus Lodge, the TV star goes straight to the Spyder, subjecting it to scrutiny that even the famed German Technical Inspection could not surpass. He pauses at the rear attachment points for the sunshield. How does it work, he wants to know. A Porsche expert opens the rear trunk and begins fastening the sunshield in place.

Standing a few feet away, Seinfeld turns to his friends with a big smile and says, very quietly,

“This is genius.”

Then he wants to test his enthusiasm all the more. Questioning is one of his passions. He goes to the Porsche tent, where design engineers are talking about how their team has reduced weight in the Spyder.

One of them invites Seinfeld to pick up the one-piece rear luggage compartment lip.

A fleeting moment of doubt on Seinfeld’s face is supplanted by a wide grin and a laugh as he easily hoists the lightweight component. He looks closely at the piece of metal and asks for confirmation that the silver-metal lid has not been painted. He is assured that it hasn’t been. That inspires him. He wants to know if he can get one that’s completely unpainted.

The Porsche officials hesitate for an instant.

“How many pounds would we save by not having paint?” Seinfeld asks with a grin. Ah, everyone thinks, he’s kidding.

Finally, as Seinfeld sits in the Boxster Spyder in the driveway and the car is about to pull away, an event worker rushes up and offers him some new driving gloves.

“Too much weight,” he smiles, and releases the clutch. He returns two hours later. What does he think? “My RSKSpyder is here,” he says, “and the basic idea, from 1958 to now, is similar. It feels like the same idea, pursued with the perspective gained from all these years.”

The comedian slips quickly into the role of an automotive tester, and every word is serious. What about the Boxster Spyder’s driving characteristics?

“You can’t make that car mess up. It will not stumble. And it’s got a comfortable suspension,” he replies. “You know,” he muses, “you really can drive it around the neighborhood to run an errand”—
although that would be something like hiring a Michelin threestar
chef to whip up a turkey burger.

Porsche-purist Seinfeld will order his Spyder without the air-conditioning and the optional navigation system. But he might give in on the radio and order it as an option.

“There’s something about cars and music,”he explains. “Now, if the law allowed a louder exhaust, that would work. So you need a radio to stimulate the other senses.” Okay, what color? He pauses and thinks for a moment. “Can I get apaintless Boxster Spyder?” he wonders out loud. “That rear deck lid was really great…”

Paris Barn find, Restoration of Porsche 917-024 movie "Le Mans"

917 FOUND IN A BARN…

The Porsche 917-024: this car is found in a granary near Paris after ca. 30 years (?????).
This car was only in Le Mans Test Weekend in April 1970 and was a film-car (one of a few film-cars) in movie “24.Heures of Le Mans” with Steve Mc Queen.

The car was in Jo Siffert-collection in this time.
And it is found near Paris (in a granary!!!!) by an editor from german oldtimer-magazine “Motor Klassik”.

About the 2001 barn find in the Paris suburbs of 917-024 : German magazine Motor Klassik (March 2002) had an article with pictures of the car as it was found.

It carried number 65 and they still haven’t found out where that came from. It was the home of the “Ratatouille” family that had eaten away most of the electrical wiring and more. It has some Jo Siffert Automobiles / Fribourg stickers on the rear body.
According to my files, chassis 024 ran only at the Le Mans preliminaries in 1970 by Redman and Hailwood when it was white. It has no race history and was used for the Le Mans movie with an engine loaned from Zuffenhausen. The engine returned after the filming, the car disappeared.

Victory at Long Beach! Long and Bergmeister Win at Long Beach – 2nd Straight Year

Victory at Long Beach!
April 18, 2010

Long and Bergmeister Win at Long Beach – 2nd Straight Year
Patrick Long and Jörg Bergmeister teamed to take a spectacular victory at the Tequila Patrón American Le Mans Series at Long Beach Saturday, after Long drove a blistering stint and raised himself from 3rd in class to 1st with two well-executed passes.  Bergmeister started the race in the #45 Flying Lizard Porsche 911 GT3 RSR, fought through intense traffic and handed the car off to Patrick in 4th.

LBGP Pit Wall

Heavy traffic – a record 36 entries started the race on the tight, sinuous street course – was a major factor in every team’s race. During the race’s only round of pit stops, the two BMW M3s of Rahal Letterman Racing opted not to take fresh tires. Flying Lizard’s strategists showed extreme confidence in their over-the-wall mechanics, and their gamble paid off as Long beat the previously leading Falken Porsche and 2nd placed Risi Ferrari out of the pits, giving him fresh tires to chase down the now-leading BMW duo. Within two laps, Long had passed Joey Hand for 2nd position, and with 10 minutes left in the race, passed Tommy Milner for the lead.

The victory makes it five consecutive podium finishes for Patrick at Long Beach, and two straight wins. Bergmeister and Long are now tied for the GT championship lead with Jaime Melo and Gimmi Bruni of Risi Ferrari; Patrick and Jörg have now amassed 16 ALMS victories together.  The # 45 Porsche also won the Michelin Green X Challenge for the GT entry operating at the highest efficiency with the lowest environmental impact.

Patrick said, “Winning at Long Beach is just an unbelievable result. It’s always spectacular racing at my home track, where I’ve been coming since I was a kid. There’s just something about the energy and the vibe that make it such a special race. The second half of the race started with the Lizard boys absolutely nailing it in the pits – we left nothing on the table with that effort. We were able to overtake the Falken Porsche, the Risi Ferrari and the leading Corvette in the pits. From there, it was about getting past the BMWs, who were very quick on the straight but didn’t take tires in their pit stop.”

LBGP Pit Wall

He continued, “In the end, I got past Joey Hand in traffic to get into 2nd, and had to make an aggressive move on Tommy Milner to take the lead. Then I was able to pull clear, and by the time the Corvette had got past Milner’s BMW, I was far enough down the track that he wasn’t able to catch me before the checkered flag. We’re excited to be tied for the championship now, and all in all, it was just a fantastic weekend. I’m looking forward to being at the LMS race at Spa in Belgium here in a couple of weeks, and then of course up to Laguna Seca for round 3 of the ALMS.”

Porsche Carrera Cup GB Porsche Experience TV

http://www.youtube.com/v/Pa3IYkUmABc&hl=en&fs=1

Porsche Carrera Cup Great Britain In 2010, the Porsche Carrera Cup GB will again be one of the most important and prestigious race championships in Britain and will be a major support race to the MSA British Touring Car Championship.

The new season will be the eighth year of Carrera Cup in Britain, modelled on Porsche’s long-established world-wide Carrera Cup concept. Equal cars, close and exciting racing and first-class facilities for teams and drivers all add to the strength of the championship. The 911 GT3 Cup car, introduced for the start of the 2008 season, offers drivers a mighty 420bhp, a sequential gearbox and a superb chassis. It is a purpose-built thoroughbred racer.

The successful pro-am1 category ensures that the less-experienced and non-professional racers can compete for their own points and prize money within the overall championship. Meanwhile, the pro-am2 category caters for 2006 and 2007 model cars and offers series newcomers the chance to sample the Carrera Cup on a restricted budget. In total, the championship prize fund is almost £100,000.

At the end of the season, three road-going 911s will be presented as the overall champion, the pro-am1 champion and the winning team principal in the team championship will all win the use of a Porsche 911 road car for a year. Supporting the Carrera Cup GB will be an excellent TV package, with races covered in detail in a new series of ‘Motorsport UK’, which will be screened on ITV4 and ITV1.

In addition, a number of races will feature within the extended live ITV4 coverage of BTCC race days. In the grid in 2010 representing the Carrera Cup GB Scholarship will be Michael Meadows and Euan Hankey, who both £50,000 towards their Carrera Cup season in the annual Scholarship programme.

Porsche – Carrera GT: Porsche Experience TV

http://www.youtube.com/v/pb6jAi1A0yg&hl=en_US&fs=1&color1=0x3a3a3a&color2=0x999999&hd=1&border=1

Porsche April 12, 2010 Experience the epic power and performance of this iconic Porsche. Watch the awe-inspiring Carrera GT being put to the test at the Porsche Experience Centre at Silverstone as its raw performance and breathtaking dynamics are fully explored.

The Porsche Carrera GT (Project Code 980) is a mid-engined sports car that was manufactured by Porsche in Leipzig, Germany.

The Carrera GT is powered by a 5.7 litre V10 engine producing 612 DIN (605 SAE) horsepower (450 kW), whereas the original concept car featured a 5.5 litre version rated at 558 hp (416 kW). Porsche claims it will accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h (62.1 mph) in 3.9 seconds and has a maximum speed of 330 km/h (205 mph), although road tests indicated that in reality the car can accelerate from 0-60 mph (97 km/h) in 3.5 seconds and 0-100 mph (160 km/h) in 6.8 seconds, while 0-125 mph (201 km/h) in 9.9 seconds.

The Carrera GT has a basic five colour paint scheme which includes Guards Red, Fayence Yellow, Basalt Black, GT Silver and Seal Grey. Custom colours were also available from the factory. A traditional six-speed manual transmission is the only available transmission. Attached to this gearbox is a beechwood gearknob which pays homage to the wooden gearknob used in the Porsche 917 Le Mans racers.

In its second year of production, a limited edition carbon fibre knob was also made available. The Carrera GT has large side inlets and air dams that help cool the large V10 engine framed by the carbon fibre rear bonnet. Fitted with Porsche’s latest Carbon fibre-reinforced Silicon Carbide (C/SiC) ceramic composite brake system, the 15-inch (380 mm) SGL Carbon disc brakes make an impressive appearance underneath the 19 inch front and 20 inch rear wheels.

Similar to other Porsche models, such as the 911, the GT includes an automated rear wing spoiler which deploys above 70 mph (110 km/h). The interior is fitted with soft leather. Bose audio system and navigation systems are available as options. In typical Porsche fashion, the ignition is to the left of the steering wheel.

This placement dates back to the early days of Le Mans racing when drivers were required to make a running start, hop into their cars, start them and begin the race. The placement of the ignition enabled the driver to start the car with his left hand and put it in gear with his right. Notable technology includes a pure carbon fiber monocoque and subframe, dry sump lubrication and inboard suspension.

The carbon fiber monocoque and subframe were produced and assembled by ATR Composites Group of Italy. The spoiler of the Carrera GT extends into the air when the car reaches about 70 miles (110 km) an hour and evens out the air flow, which causes less drag. The Carrera GT radiator is about five times the size of a 911 Turbo’s. Front and rear suspension consist of pushrod activated shock absorbers and dampers with front and rear anti-roll bars.

This was 3 spots higher than their finish in Round 1. Impressive advancements with their Hybrid technology. In 4th place was Black Falcon’s #1 Audi R8 LMS.

In regards to the BMW racecars, here’s how they did.

Team Schnitzer (BMW Motorsport) with their #743 BMW M3 which had a successful round 1 finishing in 3rd had issues this time and end up finishing in 46th place.

Team Schubert with their #91 BMW Z3 GT3 which placed 9th in the previous round have improved their spot this time around finishing in 6th place.

Local: In Marin : Gearing up for the 2010 Marin-Sonoma Concours d’Elegance

Gearing up for the 2010 Marin-Sonoma Concours d’Elegance

Calling all hot-rod aficionados, Porsche lovers and wooden boat fans! (Wooden boats? At a car show?)

The second annual Marin-Sonoma Concours d’Elegance is planned for May 16 and one of this year’s special categories will be vintage wooden boats. The boats will be displayed on the lagoon that is part of the sprawling Marin County Civic Center Fairgrounds where the show will be held for the second year in a row.

See the cars from last year’s Concours in a slide show here…

But back to the cars. The organizers expect to showcase 200 exotic and rare vehicles in 18 different classes with Porsche as the featured marquee.

One very special Porsche will be on display; rock singer Janis Joplin‘s 356 Porsche convertible pictured above. The car, with it’s psychedelic paint-job, is on loan from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Museum in Ohio. A special exhibit of Hot Rods and the amazing Lexus LFA Supercar (the only one in the U.S.) round out the show.

A special pre-show drive takes place the day before in West Marin; 150 classic and vintage cars will take to the road to celebrate the joy of the drive.

In addition to the cars will be vendors with automotive products, food and live music. The Concours proceeds will benefit Hospice By The Bay

2010 Marin-Sonoma Concours d’Elegance details–

  • Sunday, May 16, 2010 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
  • Marin Center Fairgrounds, Marin Civic Center, San Rafael

Customized 1978 Porsche 911 – Paul Begg, Car Designer, built the ‘RAW-sche’

Have you seen the ‘Rawsche’?

It’s not every day that you see an alcohol manufacturer getting involved with four wheeled projects. However the Australian brewery VB Raw had taken on a rather unique approach to tuning with designer, Paul Begg, by stripping a classic 1978 Porsche 911 down to bare sheet metal before rebuilding it into a one of a kind rolling masterpiece that they called the ’Rawsche’.

Everything from the modern headlamps sourced from a 993 to the classic grill over the flat six from an old 356 is pure Porsche.

What do you get when you strip back a classic 1978 Porsche 911 and rebuild it into a one-of-a-kind marvel? That’d be the ‘Rawsche’, so dubbed for its affiliation with the fresh Australian beer VB Raw.

The Rawsche was rebuilt via a live webcam on vbraw.com.au at the end of 2009, and was given away to one lucky viewer who best displayed their allegiation to the Raw cause. Which was won by Shane Nelson.

As a fond farewell to the shiny silver friend, VB Raw have put together a short video that documents the Porsche rebuild project. Thought you’d be interested in taking a look at what Paul Begg, car designer did to the 1978 classic.

About Paul Begg

The man behind the rebuild was Paul Begg. He’s an artist and designer whose style is streamlining – knocking the corners off and getting back to organic roots. You can see some of his other stuff here: http://www.flowstudio.com./

Stripping things back to their bare beauty is something the VB Raw team had in mind when it made VB Raw, a new easy-drinking dry lager that’s brewed from nothing artificial. The guys stripped the beer back to just four simple ingredients, creating a fresh tasting, easy drinking beer. By giving the Porsche the ‘Raw’ treatment, Paul achieved his desired end result – taking the car back to its ‘Raw’ basics, stripping back everything superficial and creating a totally unique car.

The key mods he made were:

  • A rounded bumper in composite fibre
  • A custom alloy valance that shows off a GT3 style muffler
  • Old school race seats in alloy with leather cushions
  • A colour combination of ‘House of Kolor’ silver, mat black and polished alloy body panels

The Marin Sonoma Concours
–by Kurt Fischer, PCA Redwood Region past president
http://marinsonomaconcours.org/marin…org/index.html

I am only fixated on one thing now until after May 16, 2010 and that is the Marin-Sonoma Concours d’ Elegance and the Redwood Region’s participation in the biggest Porsche event in all of Zone 7 for 2010.

We have three categories of events that you can partake in…
1. We are still looking for the best of the best in Porsches for the Concours itself. We will be using the PCA Zone 7 Concours rules for “street” class, which covers everything except the chassis and underpinnings in these classes; 356, 911’s to 1973 and newly added 912’s and 914’s to 1976 along with Porsche race cars of any year! If you have that fine car or know of someone who has one…please go to this link!
2. On Saturday, May 15, 2010, we have “The Drive” which starts in Mill Valley with a continental breakfast and after a 2 + hour spirited drive on the back roads of Marin and Sonoma Counties ends up with a gourmet lunch at the Rockin H Ranch situated on the Petaluma River. The cost for this event is $40.00 per person. We are allotted 75 cars or 150 people on the first come basis! We already have over 60 people on this tour, so do not get left behind. Get your application in ASAP. This is for any Porsche, regardless of year! Here is the link for “The Drive”.
3. On Sunday, May 16, 2010 for the Concours, we have about 108 spaces in a special Car Corral Area adjacent to the Concours field and not stuck out with the rest of the “other” cars! Corrals are great places for socializing and general tire kicking of our favorite marque. The cost for the corral is $40.00 per car and that includes 2 admissions to the Concours! Here is the link.
Last year, the Marin-Sonoma Concours d’ Elegance had 180 cars on the field and thousands of visitors for its first year and this year, the field has been expanded to 200 cars. You will not find a better Concours on this side of the Golden Gate Bridge; you name the car and it will be there!
Remember PORSCHE is the featured marque and we will have the iconic Janis Joplin wildly painted 356 there on display along with many other surprises! This Concours is in our own backyard…the Redwood Region and benefits Hospice By the Bay. All events are tax deductible! Please reserve your space now, as these events will fill up fast!
If you have any questions, please click here to email me.
Kurt
