PORSCHE GT3 CUP CHALLENGE COMES TO THE BENELUX 2013

All recent 911 GT3 Cup cars in one championship, six events in 2013

The 2013 racing season will bring the

Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge to the Benelux

An initiative of Prospeed Competition and GT3.nl, with the support of national importers.

GRÂCE-HOLLOGNE –The 2013 racing season will bring the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge to the Benelux. This Challenge is an officially supported Porsche racing platform for drivers, teams and fans in the Benelux market.

ProSpeed_PorscheGT3CupChallenge_911GT3Cup_I

The Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Benelux is created in a joint effort with D’Ieteren Porsche Import (Belgium), Pon Porsche Import (The Netherlands) and the Luxembourg Porsche importer Autosdistribution Losch.

ProSpeed_PorscheGT3CupChallenge_911GT3Cup_II

The Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Benelux will be the twentieth member of a family that encompasses the Porsche Mobil1 Supercup and various Porsche Carrera Cups and GT3 Cup Challenges representing the Porsche racing DNA throughout the world…

Leading the way will be the second generation of the 997-based 911 GT3 Cup car. This 450bhp race car, based on the road going 911 GT3 RS, will instantly make the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Benelux the fastest one-make Cup in the Benelux.

The Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Benelux will also welcome the first generation of the 997-based 911 GT3 Cup car and optionally the 996-based 911 GT3 Cup car, bringing together all recent generations of modern Porsche Cup racing in one championship.

The Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Benelux is will run several classes. The Pro-Class will see two people take the wheel of a car in the proven Pro-Am structure, joining gentleman drivers with (semi-) professional drivers, creating synergies for both.

In the Am- and Club-Class, running the first generation 997 Cup and the 996 Cup respectively, cars will be shared by two drivers as well, but only gentleman drivers are allowed. The Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Benelux is planning six events for its inaugural season and will race on all major circuits in Holland and Belgium.

The Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Benelux is created by ProSpeed Competition and GT3.nl, who have a longstanding relationship in racing and both have a background in Porsche dealership organisations. ProSpeed Competition and GT3.nl are partners of Porsche Motorsport.

The new Challenge is an excellent opportunity for commercial partners to support participating teams, connecting their brand to the strong values of Porsche and motorsport.

The Challenge will also become an inspiring and useful relationship-marketing platform, bringing the brand closer to prospects and customers through test drives and events around the Challenge.

Jean Heinen, Director D’Ieteren Porsche Import:

“The return of Porsche to the top category of the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2014 reaffirms the importance of motorsport for Porsche. At the same time 2013 will mark 50 years of the 911. It will be a good moment to celebrate the anniversary of this legendary car. As from next year the drivers of the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Benelux will help us to communicate it even more thoroughly.”

Ray Uiterwaal, Managing DirectorPon Porsche Import: –

“Motorsport and Porsche have been inseparable since the very first car that was built, and today the racing heritage is still an essential part of the company and her cars.

With the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Benelux we now have our own official platform to bring the Porsche values to our customers and fans, showcasing the level of performance and engineering in our cars, both on and off the racetrack.”

Michael Dreiser, Manager international One-Make Series, Dr.Ing. H.c. F. Porsche AG

“The worldwide Porsche one-make series provide a stable platform for all involved parties: drivers, teams, sponsors and partners. We at Porsche Motorsport are delighted that this new GT3 Cup Challenge will take off in 2013 in the Benelux countries and would like to thank the ProSpeed Competition and GT3.nl for their commitment as well as D’Ieteren Porsche Import an Pon Porsche Import for their strong support. Let’s all look forward to thrilling races.”

Prospeed – photos Porsche

Prospeed Competition organizers and GT3.nl chose to cut monobrand’s fastest Benelux 450 hp of the 911 GT3 Cup Type 997 II. But first, the first generation 997 and 996 are also welcome to complete the grid. There will be three categories (Pro and Am Club, depending on the level of drivers and cars) and the schedule includes six races on circuits Belgian and Dutch.

Benelux is a union of states comprising three neighbouring countries in northwestern EuropeBelgium, the Netherlands andLuxembourg. The union’s name is formed from joining the first two or three letters of each country’s name – Belgium Netherlands Luxembourg – and was first used to name the customs agreement that initiated the union (signed in 1944).[2] It is now used in a more general way to refer to the geographic, economic and cultural grouping of the three countries.

In 1951, these countries joined West Germany, France, and Italy to form the European Coal and Steel Community, the predecessor of theEuropean Economic Community (EEC) and today’s European Union (EU).

The main institutions of the Union are the Committee of Ministers, the Parliament, the Council of the Union, the Court of Justice, the Secretariat-General, the Organization for Intellectual Property.

The Benelux Secretary-General is located in Brussels. It is the central administrative pillar of the Benelux Economic Union. It handles the secretariat of the Committee of Ministers, the Council of Economic Union and the various committees and working parties. Moreover, it ensures the registry of the Benelux Court of Justice.

Norway’s North Cape in a Classic Porsche 911: A true winter wonderland…with Classic Driver Frank Strothe

teaser52uk_1Norway‘s North Cape is one of the most northerly points in Europe. When the time was right, Classic Driver Frank Strothe checked the battery and alternator of his 1966 Porsche 911 (shod with studded winter tyres), stuffed a sleeping bag and other essentials under the ‘bonnet’ and set off.

Porsche_911_Nordkap_18pop

The Idea

I’ve always wanted to go to the ‘Nordkapp’, writes Frank Strothe. I’ve been before, in the summer, but there was no challenge in it. So for years I’ve pondered a winter expedition; driving in the snow is more fun, especially in a classic car that relies on your driving skill to keep it on the road, rather than a host of electronic safety measures.

In Finnmark – Norway’s northernmost county – mothers use run-of-the-mill hatchbacks to take their children to school in -40deg temperatures.

So to make the trip worthwhile I needed a slightly more adventurous ride: what better choice than an original, unrestored Porsche 911?

Porsche_911_Nordkap_20pop Porsche_911_Nordkap_21pop

I was given various tips on how to make sure the first leg of my journey wasn’t to be my last. Recommended equipment included a portable heater, a satellite phone, auxiliary fuel tank, additional lights and a crash course in basic mechanics.

Perhaps a little naively, I ignored them all. I wanted a ‘pure’ experience, so I checked the battery and alternator, fitted spiked winter tyres and packed a sleeping bag and tent into the front luggage compartment. No more messing around, it was time to get going.

Porsche_911_Nordkap_22pop

The Trip

I trailered the 911 from Germany with – what else? – a modern Land Rover Discovery. From Kramfors onwards I left my fate to the old Porsche, which I drove to Rovaniemi for the first night. Next day, the goal was to reach Ivalo where my reward would be a session at the Porsche Driving Experience, to drive some of my car’s descendents on a frozen lake. It was very impressive, but, when dusk settled, I was glad to return to the wheel of my classic 911.

Porsche_911_Nordkap_03pop Porsche_911_Nordkap_13pop

The next morning, I attempted to make the short trip from the old fishing village of Gjesvær to the North Cape. However, progress was halted by an oversight in my journey planning. Due to crossing a time zone, and the ban on covering the last few kilometres to the Cape alone, I had to wait an hour to join a twice-daily convoy.

Porsche_911_Nordkap_08pop Porsche_911_Nordkap_09pop

Our cavalcade was a rather small one as it turned out. Led by a listless snowplough, it was just a BMW X6 with Russian plates and my 911 bringing up the rear – probably one of the most diverse trio of vehicles I’ll ever belong to. Since it was so deserted that day, I had ample time to photograph the car next to The Globe, the North Cape’s landmark monument.

Porsche_911_Nordkap_10pop Porsche_911_Nordkap_14pop Porsche_911_Nordkap_15pop

During one refuelling stop, I noticed the tyre pressures were a little low. I corrected them and went on my way, only to spin the car while pulling out of the petrol station (much to the amusement of a bus full of German tourists). I made my getaway, ego somewhat damaged, and again began to enjoy the sprawling, empty road ahead. By this point I had covered over 2,000km in snowy and icy conditions and had become accustomed to them, happily wagging the 911’s tail through corners.

Porsche_911_Nordkap_19pop

Unfortunately, another dramatic spin soon left us both in deep snow, the 911 truly beached. It turned out that the air pressure gauge at the petrol station was wrongly calibrated: each tyre had been overinflated, so the spikes were no longer effective on the ballooning tyres. A friendly group of Norwegians came to my rescue – but not before the return of the holidaying Germans who had another chuckle at my expense.

Porsche_911_Nordkap_12pop

Apart from that, and a spell where the alternator threw a wobbly for a few hours, the 911 was very well behaved. It even played saviour when I returned to the Land Rover at the end of the trip, as the Discovery’s battery had drained away. In total, I travelled 6,000km in six days, and pretty well loved every minute.

Porsche_911_Nordkap_05pop

Car & Equipment

1966 Porsche 911 SWB, with the carburettor trumpets partially taped-over to prevent them icing up. The only other modifications were the studded winter tyres. The car is unrestored and totally original.

Be careful. You should always carry enough in the car to survive a night outside at -40deg: an Arctic sleeping bag, a tent (or, at a push, you could sleep in the car), a down jacket, thermal trousers, thick gloves, a hat and plenty of food.

I didn’t, but you should really take snow chains for emergencies. Fill up whenever the tank is half full. The 911’s heater will not work properly below -20deg. So, while driving, I wore ski pants, a Polar anorak, thick mittens, a hat, and hiking boots. And still froze.

All the windows were frozen solid, too, apart from the windscreen. But in such a deserted land, it’s only necessary to look ahead…

VIDEO: Porsche 924 on Snow (5°Snowfall) and Winter Maintenance

Check out the videos below.

PATRICK RIVA'S daily driver engaged on the Swiss slippery roads (some years ago) .. I did the photo montage extrapolating frames from a movie that a friend of mine has made.

Make sure your Porsche 924 is ready for wintertime.

This makes me think that everybody’s ride needs a little checkup once in a while.

Even Santa’s Sleigh needs a little tightening before it takes off in the cold, snow, and ice.

Make sure you don’t get stuck in the snow waiting for a reindeer or a tow truck to help you.

Get your car checked before the icy grip of winter settles in.

A little word of caution. The winter months are hard on your car. Everything from the extreme cold to the dirt and corrosive materials brought in by snow can do lots of damage. Getting your car a winter maintenance check before the cold weather sets in can go a long way in preventing problems from popping up.

If you don’t have a fully functional spark plug with working spark plug wires and a clear well maintained fuel delivery system your engine could have some trouble starting and warming up in the cold. The cold can also cause parts of your engine to crack going from the extreme cold to heat if they’re not treated properly.

Of course it goes without saying that your tires and your brakes should be in top working condition for those icy roads too. Check your anti-freeze to make sure the mixture is right and that your engine doesn’t seize up in the cold and make sure your tires are safe and sound.

Bad tires can very quickly turn your car into a sled when you are going down an icy hill.

Driving down an icy road in subzero temperatures isn’t the time to think about what your car needs to survive the winter. A Winter maintenance check is designed to make sure your car is ready to withstand the icy roads and harsh temperatures.Be sure you are getting someone who is going to take care of your car and treat it like the valuable high performance machine that it is.

Happy Holidays! And safe driving….

1955 Winter Vintage Porsche Motor Skiing (With a Twist) the World’s Most Dangerous Sport

motor-skiing-1

The roots of ‘skijoring’ or motor skiing can be traced back to Bavaria, circa 1955, when a group of Germanic lunatics decided it would be a good idea to use motorbikes, VW Beetles and Porsches to tow themselves around for fun.

Filmed in Bavaria, Germany. The skiers are towed behind cars travelling at great speed.

motor-skiing-2

The concept is simple enough: put a rope on a car or motorcycle, presumably equipped with studded snow tires, then have the driver navigate a race course at speeds up to 100 miles per hour.

motor-skiing-6

motor-skiing-8

Probably not considered the most dangerous sport by today’s standards!

motor-skiing-5

Evidently safety was not as big of a concern back then either. The speeds and proximities to other skiers in this clip are unlike anyone would have attempted.

motor-skiing-3

motor-skiing-7

See the Teutonic madness, featuring Porsche 356s and even a Porsche 550 Spyder, a short but sensationalized video below.

You can spot the Porsche 550 Spyders in the video, and what appears to be Otto Mathe’s famous 4 cam-powered single seat racer, which you can see in person visiting the Prototype Museum in Hamburg.

Probably the Gmund 040, then used by Otto Mathe to tow his ice racer

With a simple pencil or charcoal he started drawing, with great talent, these legendary cars which were all hauting his mind. At the time his preference for “3/4 front” and black and white drawings is evident. After studying three years at the Art Décos school, he established his unique and innovative style, synthetising space, light, shape, movement and color.

Pushing his work on reflections and details to the limit, his paintings now emphasized the light and shadows rapping around exquisite bodywork. Stéphane’s work is eclectic, ranging from Ferrari to Aston Martin and passed Citroen.

However his unassailable passion for Porsche shines through with numerous and honorable art works of unique German supercars.

These paintings and drawings of epic Porsches, Le Mans prototypes and exceptional 911s, guaranty him an international acclaim.

Moreover the quality of his work was officially recognized by the Porsche firm, who have guaranteed him over the past years a certified international licence for artistic reproductions of the Zuffenhausen‘s production.

After years using only pencils, oil paint or airbrush, Stéphane started sculpting in 2004 and recently using digital technology, thereby enriching his artistic production. He describes his own work as hyperréalistic, but also claims a more abstract style on certain paintings, sculptures and digital artwork principally.

The real story of 917-021

The Porsche 917chassis number 021, was built in 1969 and was part of the first batch of twenty-five 917s.

In April 1970, it was sold to the Finnish AAW team and then painted in the red and yellow colours of its title sponsor. The car’s first race, the Monza 1000 kms, was really an extended test session and it saw the flag in eleventh place. Next came the Spa-Francorchamps 1000 km in which Laine-van Lennep improved to fifth overall. Two weeks later tragedy struck at the Nürburgring when Hans Laine was killed in practice in the AAW team’s Porsche 908/2.

The 917 did not take part in the following day’s race.David Piper and van Lennep drove 021 in the Le Mans 24 Hours, but the Englishman crashed in pouring rain in the Dunlop curve when in third place. He brought the car back to its pit where it was repaired. Van Lennep went back out and was eliminated when a tyre exploded on the Mulsanne straight due to excessive wear caused by the twisted chassis. The 917 was sent back to the factory for repairs. Given the lack of time available before its next race (Norisring) Porsche took chassis 012 from stock. It had been repaired in Stuttgart and all the mechanical components from 021 were grafted onto it and the chassis was renamed 021.

On 28th June it arrived at the Norisring for the Interserie race with a provisional decoration: a white front bonnet and a yellow engine cover. Hans-Dieter Dechent, the Martini boss, then rented 021. He had it painted in the psychedelic mauve and green livery seen on the long-tail 917 (chassis 043) that came second in the 1970 Le Mans 24 Hours. He entered it for van Lennep-Larrousse in the Watkins Glen 6 Hours in the USA and the CanAm event the following day. On 23rd August the Porsche sported a new red and yellow psychedelic livery, the AAW team’s colours, for the Keimola Interserie race in which it scored its first win. On 20th September van Lennep clinched victory no.2 in the Zandvoort Trophy.

In the Paris 1000 km 021 retired with blown valves with van Lennep at the wheel. The 917’s last race for the Martini team was the Kyalami 9 Hours with Siffert and Ahrens. The car had a 5-litre engine for the South African event and it saw the flag in second place. 021 then went back to Porsche where its engine was removed and installed in the 917 01-021 spyder for the AAW team in 1971. The original chassis and bodywork as sold to Manfred Freisinger in 1972. Three years later Joachim Grossmann bought and restored 917-021. He painted it white, detuned the engine and used it as his road car! In 1983, it was sold to American collector Don Marsh. In 1996, he put it back in to its Watkins Glen configuration although the colours and arabesques did not exactly correspond to the original livery. Bobby Rahal bought 021 in 2002 and sold it on to Juan Barazi the following year.

Vincent Gaye purchased 021 at the end of 2007 and decided to carry out a full restoration. The car turned a wheel for the first time in 2011.

Discover the history and the technical secrets of its legendary 180° V12 engine, the car’s soul. Also pictured are its liveries and decorations starting with the classic red and yellow Shell paintwork and finishing with the two psychedelic colour schemes that marked its 1970 racing career.

The book also describes the meeting with Joachim Grossmann, the only other man (with Count Rossi) to have registered a 917 as a road-going car!

The story of the Porsche 917’s exceptional restoration and its return to the track will give the reader never-before published insight’s into one of the greatest racing cars in the history of motor racing!

The Porsche Cup is endowed with a total value of 253,000 Euro. In the competition initiated by Ferry Porsche, drivers earned points in 18 Grand Touring and prototype race series worldwide as well as at selected long distance races. Professional race driver and part-time farmer Nick Tandy headed into 2012 as the reigning champion of the Carrera Cup Deutschland driving a Porsche 911 GT3 RSR run by the experienced Manthey Racing team in the International GT Open. Sharing the cockpit with works driver Marco Holzer, Tandy won five races.
In the ADAC GT Masters, Tandy competed for the Geyer & Weinig EDV – Schütz Motorsport squad at the wheel of a 911 GT3 R. Here, Tandy and his teammate Christian Engelhart scored four victories. For the Brit, the season concluded with seventh place in the drivers’ classification.

Driving Felbermayr-Proton’s Porsche 911 GT3 RSR, Ruberti won the GT Am class at the Sebring 12 Hours and the 6 hour race in Bahrain.

Stuttgart. The Porsche 911 GT3 Cup is the most successful race car in the world. Since 1998, 2,395 units of the near standard vehicle for customer sport were produced.

The new edition of the 911 GT3 Cup is the motorsports version of the future 911 GT3 and as such is the first race car that is based on the seventh generation of the sports car icon from Zuffenhausen.

The car for one-make racing made its debut on the occasion of the end of motorsport season “Night of Champions” celebration at the R&D Centre in Weissach.

Porsche 911 GT3 Cup

The new Porsche 911 GT3 Cup is powered by a 3.8-litre six-cylinder flat engine. It generates 460 hp (338 kW) at 7,500 revs, surpassing the predecessor by 10 hp.

Porsche 911 GT3 Cup

A six-speed dog-type gearbox developed by Porsche Motorsport which is operated via shift paddles at the steering wheel for the first time in a Porsche brand trophy race car transmits the power to the rear axle.

The single piece race wheels with centre mount were also newly designed by Porsche Motorsport.

The width of the Michelin race slicks was increased by two centimetres to 27 centimetres at the front and by ten millimetres at the rear axle to now measure 31 centimetres.

A newly developed race braking system further improves the excellent endurance qualities compared to its successful predecessor. The 380 millimetre slotted and inner-vented steel brake rotors at the front axle are decelerated by six-piston aluminium fixed callipers. The rear axle features a four-piston version.

During the development of the new car a particular emphasis was put on the driver safety. A newly designed safety cage protects the pilot in case of a roll or a collision as does a newly developed race seat which is distinctively shaped around the head and shoulders and can be adjusted individually with the help of padding. A rescue hatch in the roof provides easy access for primary medical attention and for the extrication of the driver.

“The new 911 GT3 Cup is much easier to drive at the limit,” says Porsche works driver Timo Bernhard, who was significantly involved in the development of the new vehicle.

“The car is excellently balanced. The new axle geometry is enormously positive for the handling. Apart from that the new Cup 911 is great fun to drive.”

Like its predecessor the new Porsche 911 GT3 Cup is produced in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen on the same assembly line as the road legal models.

PORSCHE NEWS: Le Mans 24 Hours/WEC: LMP1 Sports Prototype to Be Run by Weissach-Based Works Team

561698_500117373352290_447943200_n

STUTTGART, GERMANY, Dec 08

At the Weissach Motorsport Centre, preparations for the running of the new LMP1 sports prototype at the Le Mans 24 Hours and in the sports car World Endurance Championship are progressing at high revs. For this feat the infrastructure was considerably expanded.

A new workshop building and an office complex have been completed. “The first rollout of our new LMP1 car is planned for mid-2013,”announced Wolfgang Hatz, Porsche AG Board of Management Member for Research and Development, on Saturday on the occasion of the end of season “Night of Championscelebration”.

“The car will be run by our own works team based here at Weissach.” The LMP1 project was realised by a new department headed by Fritz Enzinger.

With his well-established organisational structure, Porsche’s Head of Motorsport Hartmut Kristen continues to be responsibilityfor all other motorsport programmes worldwide. The customer sport model 911 GT3 R celebrated 41 wins from 131 starts in a range of GT3 racing series worldwide. For the 2013 season Porsche offers teams an upgrade package which will position the GT3 R even better in the performance window as defined by the FIA.

In his speech, Hatz underlined the importance of GT racing for Porsche and pleaded for two different GT categories for works-supported professional sport and for customer sport:

“In factory sport the regulations must be based on technology while in customer racing a stronger alignment of the relative strength by Balance of Performance measures is legitimate.”

In addition to the promotion of four Porsche Juniors, one pilot from the international makes cups will enjoy comprehensive support for the 2013 season. Frenchman Jean-Karl Vernay (25) who won the Carrera Cup France at his first attempt last season receives funding to the value of 200,000 Euro towards his 2013 Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup campaign. At a test session in Vallelunga, Vernay won over eight other top drivers from the Carrera Cups France, Asia, Japan, Scandinavia, Italy, Australia, Great Britain and from the GT3 Cup Challenge Canada. Vernay has already made a name for himself in international motor racing.

In 2005 he claimed the championship in the French feeder series Formula Renault Campus and went on to finish second in a Formula 3 single-seater at the Macau Grand Prix in 2009. In 2010 Vernay went to the USA and promptly clinched overall victory in the Indy Lights Series’ in his first season. Peugeot contracted the Frenchman as a test and reserve pilot for their LMP1 project in 2011. At the same time Vernay competed in the Intercontinental Le Mans Cup and was crowned LMP2 champion.

“The support from Porsche is a great opportunity for me,” says Vernay. “In the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup all drivers have to adjust to a new vehicle.

As a newcomer, this means I’ll have a good chance to be competitive right from the beginning.

The Supercup is the pinnacle of the Porsche one-brandcups and has a great reputation as a launching platform to enter professional GT sport.”

With its well-established works drivers, Porsche is relying on continuity.

All nine drivers still have a valid contract for the 2013 season or their contract was extended. For six of the nine drivers, the 24-hour race at Daytona on 26 January marks the start of the new season.

Porsche Motorsport News Feb 2012

Joerg Bergmeister drives a Porsche 911 GT3 Cup for The Racers Group. With Kevin Buckler’s squad, Bergmeister scored a sensational overall victory at Daytona in 2003 at the wheel of a Porsche 911 GT3 RS.

Marco Holzer competes for Alex Job RacingMarc Lieb again joins forces with Brumos Racing and Richard Lietz drives for last year’s winner Magnus Racing

Patrick Long goes racing for Park Place Motorsports and Patrick Pilet competes for the NGT team.

For the Porsche Juniors Michael Christensen and Klaus Bachler the race in Daytona marks the first time in their career that they contest a 24 hour race. Christensen receives support in his campaign from Christian Engelhart and Porsche Cup winner Nick Tandy for the Konrad Motorsport team with whom he contested the Carrera Cup Deutschland in 2012. Bachler is competing for Snow Racing.
