90TH PIKES PEAK INTERNATIONAL HILL CLIMB 2012 – ROMAIN DUMAS

‎2010 Le Mans Champion Romain Dumas Will Challenge The Pikes Peak.

After winning some of the most prestigious endurance races in the world, including the 24 Hours of Le Mans, Spa-Francorchamps (2003, 2010), 24 Hours of the Nürburgring (2007, 2008, 2009, 2011) and the 12 Hours of Sebring (2008), Dumas will tackle the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb.

The Alès, France, native will take the start of the 90th edition behind the wheel of a Porsche 997 GT3-R in the Pikes Peak Open Division.

“I’ve wanted to race on Pikes Peak for a long time,” Dumas told organizers. “The Audi-Peugeot dual is part of my childhood memories. I remember seeing pictures of Ari Vatanen and I had the chance to meet Walter Rorhl, who was the first to slip under the 11-minute mark. To be at the start of such a legendary race will be like a dream come true. Just from its history and its characteristics, Pikes Peak is a challenge you have to approach with humility. It’s a h

uge test, and an adventure that will be unlike anything else I’ve done in my career.”

Alongside his Porsche and Audi programs as official driver, as well as his rally schedule run with his proper team, Dumas will be competing in the hot Porsche 997 GT3-R.

His rookie appearance on Pikes Peak will be a learning year for Dumas.

“I’ll be discovering a new universe, totally impossible to simulate, of course,” he said.

“This experience will without a doubt be very interesting. I wanted to make my debut at Pikes Peak in a Porsche, and after thinking long and hard, I decided on the Porsche 997 GT3-R. I know the car and its qualities well, and I have to be smart and realistic against true specialists of the discipline, whose cars will be much more powerful. I won’t be fighting for the overall win this year. But in time I’d like to add this race to my list of accomplishments.”

Works drivers: Team building for Marc Lieb/Richard Lietz in 356 Carrera GT

At the 20th Ennstal Classic (11/14 July) in Austria – one of the most important oldtimer rallies – works drivers Marc Lieb and Richard Lietz competed in a 356 Carrera GT (1960) from the Porsche Museum.

Sharing driving duties while the other read rally pace notes from the co-driver’s seat marked a new experience for the pair.

Marc Lieb commented,

“It’s a little un-nerving for a race driver to follow the directions of someone else. But it was certainly a great team building exercise.” The two finished on position 124, partly because they ran out of pet-rol on the Red Bull Ring. Lieb said, “We didn’t have our Norbert Singer at the pit wall to do our fuel calculations for us. I guess we were a little bit wrong…”

Youth Development: Porsche expands talent initiative

In addition to the company’s long-term training and support of Porsche juniors, from 2013 Porsche gives a particularly talented youngster from Carrera Cup series worldwide the chance to move up into the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup.

VIDEO: PORSCHE 918 SPYDER EXCLUSIVE PARTY RELEASE EVENT

Private release NYC Party inside Canoe Studios in New York, for the “production” version of the 918 Spyder.

A video posted on Youtube by Canoe Studios in New York City has prematurely revealed the production version of the Porsche 918 Spyder, a hybrid supercar that was developed as a successor to the Carrera GT.

According to Youtube user liquidsk8s, the video was shot at a private ceremony where would-be owners were shown the car before the general public.

As expected, the 918 Spyder is nearly identical to the show car that was unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in 2010. Compared to the concept the production version of the car is fitted with bigger mirrors, different door handles and side marker lights that are integrated into the front and rear bumpers. It is also a little longer than the concept that inspired it in order to accommodate a roomier cabin.

An official set of technical details has yet to be released but if the rumors are true, the 918 Spyder is powered by a 4.6-liter V8 engine that is mated to two electric motors. One of them is mounted on the front axle and the other on the rear axle.

Porsche claims that the 918 Spyder delivers more than 770 horsepower while still logging up to 78.4 miles per gallon if driven conservatively.

The Volkswagen-owned company’s new flagship hits 60 mph from a stop in about three seconds and goes on to a top speed of over 200 mph.

Power from the V8 is transmitted to the rear wheels via a seven-speed PDK dual-clutch gearbox. Power from the electric motors is controlled by computer and sent directly to the front wheels.

The 918 Spyder has several drive modes, offering different levels of performance and efficiency. E-Drive minimizes fuel consumption by using the batteries to power the car for up to 16 miles. Hybrid mode uses both electric and gas power for a blend of efficiency and longer range. Sport Hybrid adds torque vectoring for more performance-oriented driving. And, lastly, Race Hybrid maximizes both gas and electric output, without regard for efficiency.

Porsche will reportedly build just 918 examples of the hybrid sports car. Pricing information will be revealed closer to its launch.
