Costa Mesa, CA – March 23rd, 2011

TruSpeed Motorsports, based in Costa Mesa, Calif., today announced the signing of Patrick Long to race the #45 PrivacyStar Porsche GT3 Cup Car in the 2011 Pirelli World Challenge Championships Series.

After much speculation, Long will first race for TruSpeed starting with the season opener of the WC Series this weekend, March 25-27 on the streets of St. Petersburg, FL.

Rob Morgan, 1996 Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona GTS-1 class winner, runs TruSpeed Motorsports, and will drive the #46 Entrust/TruSpeed Porsche GT3 Cup for the season.

Long said, “I’m excited at the chance to do some sprint racing, in a tough series and with a very strong team. TruSpeed has a great team structure with some awesome people that I have worked with in the past. That was the initial draw for me to this idea, then getting to know Rob and just how passionate he is about his racing made it a no-brainer to sign up with these guys.

I like that Pirelli World Challenge is unique – standing starts, sprint formats, double-header weekends, all that. I will be jumping in Thursday cold turkey, but I love St. Pete’s street circuit and it helps that it’s just down the road from where I’ve been living for the past four years.”

Long will race in all the events except for Miller, which conflicts with his European test schedule. Kelly Collins will take Long’s place at the Utah round of the championship.

Team owner Rob Morgan was elated to announce the hiring of Long. “I’m thrilled to be teaming up with Patrick this season, particularly as a driver. Having him around to help us continue to develop as a team will be fantastic, and I know he’ll push me as a driver. Having someone with his record of success and skill involved will help us grow, both on and off track. I can’t wait to get to work at St. Pete this weekend, and to start building on the successes we’ve had in the past.”

The Pirelli World Challenge Series kicks off this weekend with twin races on the streets of St. Petersburg, Florida, Saturday and Sunday, March 26-27.

Porsche puts on sale the 918 Spyder super sports car with its innovative plug-in hybrid drive

Starting gun for sales of the Porsche 918 Spyder hybrid super sports car 918 units of exclusive future technology

The latest rendering of Porsche’s plug-in hybrid 918 Spyder super sports car.

Now available for ordering, the 918 Spyder will feature cutting-edge plug-in hybrid technology and stunning performance, forever changing the future of the super sports car

ATLANTA – March 21, 2011 — After outstanding customer response to the concept car first shown at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show, Porsche today announced that dealers around the world will begin taking 918 Spyder customer orders. This is a significant step toward actual production of the company’s next super sports car, a Porsche that marries unique plug-in hybrid technology and outstanding performance in a visually stunning and purely Porsche package. Porsche Press Release

Stuttgart. Today is the day that Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart, puts on sale the 918 Spyder super sports car with its innovative plug-in hybrid drive. Production development is proceeding apace in the wake of the outstanding customer response to the concept car unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show 2010. Thanks to its unique hybrid technology, the 918 Spyder is estimated to consume a mere three litres of fuel per 100 kilometres (94 mpg imp.) based on the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC). Its V8 engine delivers more than 368 kW (500 hp), assisted by two electric motors with a total of at least 160 kW (218 hp). The 918 Spyder is available for immediate order priced from 645,000 Euro – subject to VAT and country-specific charges.

To ensure a 918 Spyder’s exclusivity, the two-seater is limited to no more than 918 units. The earlier a customer orders his vehicle, the earlier it will be delivered, as production is initialized in the same sequence in which orders are received. Production of the 918 Spyder is scheduled to commence on 18 September 2013 – 9/18 in US date convention – in a quasi manufacturing operation at Porsche’s main plant in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen. Delivery of the initial vehicles will commence in November 2013.

The design’s DNA is derived from the Carrera GT and Porsche 917 sports car as well as the RS Spyder and is very closely modeled on the 2010 concept car. Unlike the concept car, however, the production version of the two-seater, based on a carbon fibre-reinforced plastic monocoque, features a manual roof system with removable roof panels that can be stowed in the front luggage compartment.

The 918 Spyder is driven by a unique type of plug-in hybrid system. It comprises a high-revving V8 engine with a displacement exceeding four litres and output of more than 368 kW (500 hp). The mid-engine power unit is based on the racing engine of the successful Porsche RS Spyder, which provided impressive proof of its efficiency with its multiple victories in the Michelin Green X Challenge in the American Le Mans Series, the Le Mans Series and the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Power transmission to the rear wheels is by means of a compact, seven gear Porsche-Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK). This is complemented by two electric motors – one each on the front and rear axle – with a joint mechanical output of at least 160 kW (218 hp). This configuration offers an innovative, variable all-wheel drive with independent control of the propulsion force on both axles. The energy storage unit is a liquid-cooled lithium-ion battery that can be charged from a conventional domestic power socket, delivering a range in excess of 25 km (16 miles) in the NEDC on purely electric power. The charging time depends on the country-specific mains network, being approximately three hours in Germany, for example. A quick charging option is planned to reduce charging time yet further.

The 918 Spyder’s combined total fuel consumption in the NEDC (ECE-R 101) is anticipated to be 3.0 l/100 km (94 mpg imp.), equating to CO2 emissions of 70 g/km (112 g/mile). Despite that, the super sports car offers performance of the highest order. It accelerates from a standing start to 100 km/h (62 mph) in a maximum of 3.2 seconds and has a top speed of more than 320 km/h (199 mph). That means the Spyder will be able to manage a lap of the Nürburgring Nordschleife in less than seven minutes and 30 seconds – trumping the Porsche Carrera GT, which needs seven minutes and 32 seconds. The top speed on purely electric power is 150 km/h (94 mph).

To shorten the time the customer has to wait for the 918 Spyder, Porsche is offering everyone placing an order the exclusive opportunity to acquire a 911 Turbo S “Edition 918 Spyder”, also limited to no more than 918 units. Visually, both inside and out, the special edition is inspired by the 918 Spyder’s characteristic individual features. That includes the distinctive acid green features such as the specific and part-embroidered model logos and seams, the instrument cluster needles, the specific PCM screen and illuminated door entry guards. The limited edition badge on the glove compartment lid bears the same number as the 918 Spyder the customer has ordered. The 911 Turbo S “Edition 918 Spyder” can also be ordered in the same colour.

Both the technology and basic equipment of the new 911 Turbo S “Edition 918 Spyder” are based on the 530 hp (295 kW) 911 Turbo S. In the case of the special edition, the already comprehensive standard equipment is complemented in particular by an enhanced leather interior, a special instrumentation version and additional carbon elements both inside and out.

The 911 Turbo S “Edition 918 Spyder” is being offered to coincide with the commencement of sales of the 918 Spyder with deliveries starting in June 2011. The Coupé version of the special edition costs 173,241 Euro in Germany and 184,546 Euro as a Cabriolet – including VAT and country-specific equipment items respectively.

How Porsche dealers will order the 918 Spyder – Autoblog

According to Porsche, you can buy a 918 Spyder from any Porsche dealer anywhere in the world, provided they’ve signed a participation agreement with Porsche. Details are few and far between on what that agreement entails. What Porsche is saying, though, is how dealers who sign the agreement will order their cars.

Dealers who want to place an order for a 918 will have to submit an “Allocation Request Form.” Porsche will reply with an “Allocation Response Form,” which tells the dealer whether there’s a car available for them. Once that’s done, the dealer submits an order form, along with a $200,000 down payment. Porsche will respond with a confirmation and an estimated month for production.

The next step is another $200,000 deposit 12 months before the production date. The balance – $445,000 plus shipping, if you’re counting – is due when Porsche says the car is done. Porsche says the car will not be shipped until it has been paid for in full. The reason, apparently, is that it won’t be building any of the hyper-expensive 918s on speculation, and that each car needs to have an owner before it is built.

Porsche Rennsport IV Reunion Poster Revealed

Poster by Dennis Simon

ATLANTA – March 18, 2011. Today, Porsche Cars North America took the veils off of the official Rennsport Reunion IV artwork that will symbolize the world’s greatest gathering of historic and contemporary Porsche race cars and their drivers October 14 to 16, 2011. Because this year’s event will feature as a special highlight the decades-long success story of the 911 race cars the poster depicts two of the most exciting protagonists, the 1981 factory 935 long tail in Martini colors and Al Holbert’s 911 RSR from 1974.

The painting is the works of renowned automotive artist, Dennis Simon (www.centuryofspeed.com ) who created the posters for two of the previous venues. They show off the mighty 917 and 962 in Gulf and Löwenbräu livery (2007) and the three 908s as they cross the finish line of the 1970 24 Hours of Daytona (2004). Both posters are now collectors’ items and the new one will likely be no different.

It’s not about us, but we did play a supporting role….In this town, that counts, after all there is no business, like show business.

The lady producer, Denise Prichard,  said:   you guys are going to be on TV,  I was thinking….I should have brought my clown shoes…..Long story short, we have been commissioned to built a turbo engine for this car, Nat Geo was following this car as one of the three they were going to feature on their show.

Cut !!       again, from the top,……..it was an experience, every move was done three or four times, I think  they should make transmission lifting an Olympic sport, after installing that G50 4 times, we felt we deserve some gold , and It is not easy working with a mic taped you chest.

Porsche Design Group Comes to San Francisco

porsche

Fans of fancy sports cars rejoice!!

With existing stores in the United States doing so well in recent years, The Porsche Design Group, based in Bietigheim-Bissingen, has decided to open a store in San Francisco.

Opening its doors at 100 Grant Avenue, it will specialize in luxurious, beautifully made pieces for men and women, designed with a sporty, casual aesthetic. And if you are looking for the ultimate black leather jacket, we’re told this is the place to get it!

“Leather has been in fashion for decades,” says Dr Juergen Gessler, CEO of the Porsche Design Group. “So it fits in perfectly with our timeless and purist design standards.”

Another must-have item are their premium running shoes, Bounce:S2.

These high-tech running shoes were launched for the first time in January 2008, going on to win a number of awards. They won the “Plus X Award”, Europe’s biggest technology, sports and lifestyle competition, and “Time” magazine named them one of the 50 best innovations of the year.

Porsche Design is known for their extensive eye wear collection, which are pretty famous and almost classic

Yoko Ono made these sunglasses famous in 1979, and they have been relaunched in the Porsche Design collection. (what if Steve McQueen hung out with Yoko Ono, or did they?)… point being you could make a “spectacle” out of wearing them.

Yes, that’s right.

The famous slate grey 1970 Porsche 911S Coupe from Le Mans movie has been consigned to RM Auctions for the Monterey Sports Car Auction in August 2011, owned and driven in the movie by Steve McQueen….stated the present owner Mercedes-Benz and Porsche collector of New Jersey, Frank Gallogly, on  Pelican Parts Forum.

He bought it two years ago from the car’s third owner, Jesse Rodrigues of Long Beach, Calif. Gallogly said he had not been looking for the car. “Cars find me,” he said, adding that a friend had told him that the car was available: “Frank, a famous Porsche is for sale.” He said he called Rodrigues and was quoted a price. “It was a lot of money,” he said, and he told Rodrigues he would get back to him. “Five minutes later, I called back and said, ‘I’m in,’ ” he said, adding that he accepted the price because he figured it was the only chance he would ever have of owning the car.

Gallogly declined to say how much he paid other than to say it was closer to seven than six figures. “MY MOTTO IS: I would rather over pay for a great car, than under pay for a bad car!”

What is your guess this car will auction for ?  more than six or seven figures? I am sure there will be some interested buyers for this McQueen Porsche. Maybe another collector like Jerry Seinfeld, or Jay Leno?…you may have to wait till August to find out.

If your interested in the car contact RM AUCTIONS however, the price for the car and the details on the auction have not been released yet by RM.

Steve McQueen has one of the greatest lines about auto racing.

“A lot of people go through life doing things badly. ‘ “Racing’s important to men who do it well. When you’re racing,  it’s life. Anything that happens before or after, is just waiting.”

This is the iconic 911 that appears in the first few minutes of Le Mans, as McQueen’s character, Porsche racer Michael Delaney, drives it through the French countryside. It is a ’70 model, but very close to the ’69 that McQueen owned at the time.   Photo by Matt Stone.

This 1970 Porsche 911S Coupe was the car that Steve’s character Michael Delaney drives in the opening scenes of Le Mans. Solar Productions purchased the car for use in the film, and for Steve to drive while in Europe. The car was later shipped to America, and subsequently sold. The Porsche 911S is powered by a two-liter, air-cooled flat six that gives it brisk acceleration.

1969 Porsche 911S Coupe In a scene from 'Le Mans'

In the spring of 1970, Steve McQueen resided in France for a short period while filming the movie ‘Le Mans’. While there he ordered himself a brand new Porsche 911S, for use both in the film and for personal countryside blasts. When the movie wrapped up he decided he wanted to keep the car, so he sent it off to Stuttgart for some more US-friendly gear ratios before having it shipped to his California home. However, he already had a ’69 911 that he’d spent a small fortune installing a bespoke stereo in – he was that kind of guy – so the new Porsche was surplus to requirements.

https://dede-porsche.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/911_4.jpg?w=300

The car is still in its original spec today, featuring all of the options picked out by McQueen four decades ago: air-conditioning, leather seats, tinted windows, Fuchs alloys, driving lamps and US-band Blaupunkt stereo. It hardly needs saying that the man had taste.

Porsche Unveils The New Electric Boxster E – Undergoes Testing

Porsche Unveils The New Electric Boxster E – Undergoes Testing

Porsche Unveils The New Electric Boxster E

Porsche unveiled a new Boxster variant this week, the all electric Boxster E is a “mobile laboratory” for testing Porsche’s future electric drivetrain technology. There are currently 3 identical Boxster E’s being tested on the roads of Stuttgart, near the Porsche factory in Germany.

With 240hp and AWD the Boxster E makes the 0-60 dash in 5.3 seconds, it uses twin electric motors and has a 29 kWh battery system mounted behind the seats, offering ideal weight distribution. Porsche hasn’t revealed the top speed, range or charge time specifications for the car as Porsche is staying tight lipped about it, not uncommon when it comes to test-bed cars.

Most industry insiders are suggesting that this will be the first all electric offering from Porsche and may hit showrooms as early as 2012 with 2013 being offered as a slightly more realistic shipping date.

The Boxster is the smallest and lightest car in Porsche’s current model line up, making it ideal for an electric car conversion. Porsche has been making serious inroads into the electric and hybrid vehicle space in the past 12 months with the introduction of both the 918 RSR and the 911 GT3 Hybrid.

More updates will follow as news and information comes in from Porsche. There’s no word on when consumers will be able to get their hands on an all-electric version of the Boxster, and other details on the guts of the car are fairly sparse.

The annual ‘Get Race Fit’ event, held at The Porsche Experience Centre Silverstone, is hosted each January by the Porsche Human Performance Team and is designed to educate and inspire drivers in ways to get fit for the upcoming racing season. This year 2011 the special guest was Formula One driver Mark Webber, who shared his unique insight and experience into the importance of fitness in top level motorsport.

Competing in the heat is one of the biggest challenges faced by any driver or athlete. At Porsche Human Performance they have a thermostatically controlled training room where one can simulate the high cockpit temperatures encountered in racing cars and hot countries to allow drivers and athletes to acclimate to the conditions without leaving the UK.

Replacing the electrolytes lost in sweat not only helps racing drivers and athletes to remain optimally hydrated but it can stop cramping and prevent performance dropping away in hot or arduous conditions. The difficulty is that everyone loses electrolytes in varying amounts. At Porsche Human Performance we offer a service to evaluate sweat sodium losses and advise drivers and athletes what sports drinks and supplements to use to replace their individual losses accurately.

The Inbody analyzer used at Porsche Human Performance measures a drivers’ weight, body fat mass, body water and lean muscle mass. It is an excellent tool for providing an insight into someone’s basic fitness and tracking changes to the body that result from training or nutritional programmes.

A wellness check with Porsche Human Performance takes just 30 minutes and gives you a huge amount of information about your cardiovascular health. It includes Inbody body composition analysis, blood cholesterol and glucose testing and a blood pressure check. A comprehensive consultation on the results highlights any areas in which it would be desirable to improve and offers suggestions on how to go about this.

VIDEO: Early 1960s Porsche Factory Tour Showing All Facets of the Construction of the 356 – Made by Hand

VIDEO: Early 1960s Porsche Factory Tour Showing All Facets of the Construction of the 356 – Made by Hand

Ever wonder what Porsche 356Bs looked like coming together in Stuttgart? Here is some excellent factory footage showing various stages of manufacturing the little sports cars.

MADE BY HAND: A nice  five part video series from the 1960s takes you through the entire build process of the famed German sports car.  If you aren’t into metal work details, it might be worth it to skip ahead to video II. But the remaining four videos are definitely worth watching…enjoy!

This series is an official documentary showcasing the production of the Porsche 356 one of the most beautiful pieces of automotive designs ever produced.

According to the YouTube caption the documentary was filmed at Zuffenhausen in the early 1960s. The Super 90 engine is discussed and putting all those things together suggests these are 356Bs that are being built.

The film has been split into five parts and runs for around 40 minutes. However it is well worth the investment in time to watch all the clips. If you do you will be rewarded with some fascinating footage of old skool production techniques.

Porsche employed a stringent quality control regime and seeing how laborious that was is a real eye opener. In today’s era of highly automated production manual checking like that would not be cost effective. The three-man transmission installation technique shown in Part 4 is also, thankfully, a technique now consigned to the history books.

There are five long videos below, so sit back, relax and enjoy! Or come back later to watch the 5 part series when you have some time to kill.

NEW VIDEO:Porsche 918 RSR – Racing Laboratory With Even Higher-Performance Hybrid Drive

NEW VIDEO:Porsche 918 RSR – Racing Laboratory With Even Higher-Performance Hybrid Drive

At the 2011 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Porsche debuted their latest concept, the Porsche 918 RSR. Taking proven technology from the race-track with the GT3 R Hybrid, the 918 RSR utilized a flywheel energy recovery system for added power and traction. The 918 RSR is a coupe unlike the 918 Spyder Hybrid Concept from last year, providing additional strength and rigidity.

World premiere in Detroit: mid-engine coupé as a technology test bed

DETROIT, Jan. 10, 2011 /PRNewswire/ — Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart, is continuing to extend its performance and high efficiency competence via intensive development work in the field of hybrid technology. With the Porsche 918 RSR, the manufacturer of sporty premium vehicles is presenting a high-end synthesis of 2010’s successful hybrid concepts. The two-seater mid-engine coupé 918 RSR clearly reveals what happens when the technology fitted in the 911 GT3 R hybrid and the design of the 918 Spyder are transferred to a modern, innovative super sports car.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

With its highly-efficient flywheel accumulator, the 911 GT3 R hybrid racing car proved to be an attention magnet during competition racing on the Nuerburgring Nordschleife circuit, during the American Le Mans Series races (ALMS) in Road Atlanta/USA and the ILMC run in China’s Zhuhai. It demonstrated its massive performance potential under realistic motor racing conditions against top competitors. The 911 GT3 R Hybrid, referred to internally as the “Race Lab” actually surpassed the high expectations of Porsche Motorsport. Competitiveness, high reliability and exemplary fuel efficiency combined with top performance under-scored the Porsche technicians’ basic idea of generating additional power in an intelligent manner. The 911 GT3 R Hybrid obtains its additional power from its own vehicle dynamics when braking. Porsche is now transplanting this technology into the mid-engine coupé 918 RSR, the motor sports version of the 918 Spyder concept car.

From the tradition established by classic Porsche long-distance race cars such as the 908 long-tail coupé (1969) and the 917 short-tail coupé (1971), the Porsche designers created a link to the postmodernism of the “form follows function” philosophy. In the 918 RSR, the lines’ elegant flow is dominated by muscular wheel arches, dynamic air intakes and a pulpit-like cockpit. A visible fan wheel between the ram air intake tubes and a rear spoiler with RS Spyder dimensions additionally emphasize the racing laboratory function. The new “liquid metal chrome blue” color which has been created underscores the sculptured curves of the forms, whilst the typical Porsche hybrid orange color on brake calipers and the body’s longitudinal stripes lends remarkable touches.

Motor racing technology also dominates within the particularly light, torsionally stiff carbon fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) monocoque. The V8 engine is a further development of the direct injection engine from the successful RS Spyder race car and now offers an output of precisely 563 hp at 10,300 rpm in the 918 RSR. The electric motors on the two front wheels each contribute 75 kW, i.e. a total of 150 kW, to the peak drive power of exactly 767 hp. This additional power, which is generated during braking, is stored in an optimized flywheel accumulator. In the 918 RSR, the two electric motors offer a torque vectoring function with variable torque distribution to the front axle. This additionally increases agility and improves steering response. Mounted upstream of the rear axle, the mid-engine is integrated with a racing transmission also based on the RS Spyder race car. This further developed six-speed constant-mesh transmission with longitudinally mounted shafts and straight-toothed spur gears is operated using two shift paddles behind the racing steering wheel. The vehicle’s functional equipment underscores its puristic motor racing character. Whether it be the characteristic doors which open obliquely upwards, the air intake in the roof between the wing doors, the quick-action locks on the front and rear CFRP lids, the two roof-mounted aerials for pit radio and telemetry, the RS Spyder-like small, lateral front flics or the air splitters beneath the front lip or no-profile racing slicks on 19″ wheels with central locking, the vehicle can be clearly recognized as an experimental racing laboratory. In contrast to the 918 Spyder concept car, unadorned racing atmosphere predominates in the interior of the 918 RSR. The figure-hugging bucket seat’s brown leather covering cites the history of the gentleman driver; the gear flashes on the racing steering wheel and a recuperation display on the steering column in front of the display screen supply the pilot with information. Instead of the futuristic, ergonomically avant-garde centre console with touch-sensitive user interface from the 918 Spyder concept car, the 918 RSR’s cockpit is split by a minimalistic console with rocker switches. Instead of a second seat, the flywheel accumulator is positioned to the right of the console. This flywheel accumulator is an electric motor whose rotor rotates at up to 36,000 rpm to store rotation energy. Charging occurs when the two electric motors on the front axle reverse their function during braking processes and operate as generators. At the push of a button, the pilot is able to call up the energy stored in the charged flywheel accumulator and use it during acceleration or overtaking maneuvers. The flywheel is braked electromagnetically in this case in order to additionally supply up to 2 x 75 kW, i.e. a total of 150 kW, from its kinetic energy to the two electric motors on the front axle. This additional power is available for around eight seconds when the system is fully charged. In the successful 911 GT3 R Hybrid, this additional power can also be used as a consumption aid depending on the racing situation, e.g. to delay pit stops or reduce the fuel tank volume and therefore the weight of the vehicle. With the new 918 RSR racing laboratory, Porsche is now elevating this motor racing hybrid concept to an experimental level. In the 918 RSR, “Porsche Intelligent Performance” equates to research into methods for further sustainable efficiency improvement under the intensified conditions of the race track, lap times, pit stops and reliability — a metier in which Porsche has been demonstrating its success for over 60 years. Finally, the starting number, 22, pays homage to the anniversary of a further triumph. Back in the days when overall victories in Le Mans were not yet an entirely routine matter within the Porsche racing department, the pilots Dr. Helmut Marko and Gijs van Lennep were the first to cross the finishing line in 1971’s 24-hour classic. The distance record set by their Porsche 917 short-tail coupé — 5335.313 kilometers (3315.21 miles) at an average speed of 222.304 km/h (138.13 mph) — did not remain unbeaten for an eternity, but for exactly 39 years until 2010. At the time, the 917 in the Martini colors was also an experiment and far ahead of its time: a magnesium space frame set new standards in Porsche’s lightweight construction domain.

The speed, the excitement, the competition, the danger, just everything. “Racing is Life”….

It is difficuilt to find good super slow motion footage from races, but when they are shown they’re awesome. Things are happening too fast in the motor racing world that sometimes you need to see the whole action in slow motion.

These slow motion video’s are Mattzel89‘s way to describe the awesomeness of racing, and I think every petrolhead on this planet will thank him for this great video. This video is the third of the Racing in Slow Motion series, you can see the first two parts below, they are worth your time too.

Slow Motion 3

Just know this is a long and slow video, if you’re not prepared to sit through 8 minutes of slow motion, move on. This is for the motorsports fans. A stunning collection of 3 video’s that captures racing in a way that we usually don’t get to see it in the fine details..

Slow Motion 2

Racing is often so fast paced that the human eye misses details…..

Slow Motion 1

“super slow motion” videos for an incredible look at the details the human eye can miss …

Published by Eamonn O’Doherty on Jan 01, 2011

Petition to sign: http://www.gopetition.com/petition/41698.html#fbbox

Region: Germany

Target: Joaquin Almunia, Vice-President of EU-Commission.

Background (Preamble):

From 2007 – 2009 the German government built a huge Leisure Park at the Nürburgring. It is based on fake visitor numbers, over sized and badly executed. Most of the time it is an empty ghost town. Once promised as private investment, it is now based on a debt of 350+ million EUR public money.

Instead of pulling the plug they rented the park, including both race tracks to exactly the same privateers who were driving forces behind the Leisure Park’s initial private setup.

Without Racing experience they are since experimenting with events completely unrelated to Motor-sport all under the iconic “Nürburgring” brand name.

They now want Nordschleife to pay for the huge losses. Tourist drives are at a record high, plus a 5 times increase in rent for the automotive industry for their prototype testing sessions.

What Needs To Be Done?

  • Separate Nordschleife from ring°park.
  • Let Nürburgring be Motor-sport.
  • Value the great heritage and tradition, rather than Roller Coasters.
  • Let the Ring be run by Motor-sport experts.

In 1927 one of the worlds greatest race tracks was opened to the public after two years of construction. The track created legends.

Germany’s Nürburgring is the world’s automotive playground. A public park for gearheads. Sadly, it’s been handed over to privateers who’ve put the entire ‘Ring at risk. Michael Frison of 20832.com explains why we need to save the Nürburgring! —Ed. Blog: www.mikefrison.com (Mike’s Profile: www.facebook.com/renn.tv)

You might be surprised by reading this headline and I’m aware the subject has not gained much awareness abroad, but there’s currently a serious threat to the Nürburgring.

Since it’s opening in 1927, the Nurburgring has been under complete public ownership and administration, but in May of this year the complete Nurburgring race track and park was rented out to two privateers (Kai Richter, Jörg Lindner). They have no motorsports background whatsoever, but are the driving forces behind the makeover, which includes the addition of a theme park with a new roller coaster that doesn’t work, more hotel capacity than the area needs, a 3,000-seat event arena, and a shopping mall. Everything appears to be far too big and remains empty most of the time.

They promised private financing, but this soon turned out to be a fake. The Minister of Finance had to resign as a consequence. Despite lack of funding completion of the project continued.

(NOTE: Video is in German, if you go to the video on Youtube , check the recent comments. You will find English)

The heavy burden now sitting on Nordschleife’s shoulder is the debt of approximately 400 Million Euros, which seems completely unnecessary considering complete race tracks have been constructed for a fraction of this amount.

The issue is complex and has kept fans of the ‘Ring busy, but I want to share with you what just happend last week: Nürburgring officials always claim a total of two million visitors per year, but in true Wikileaks style we got ahold of an older internal document (PDF) telling a different story. Promoters always engage in number polishing, but this is of different quality. It appears there’s double bookkeeping for real vs. published visitors for all events held at the Ring. Have a look at the graph summarizing the figures:
Save The Nürburgring!

Who would dare to claim two million spectators while only 370,000 actually turned up? The Nürburgring did and they based the business plan of the new leisure park on these numbers.

You don’t believe me? Ask Sabine next time you meet her. Several investigations have already been triggered by the Department of Public Prosecution, a governmental board of inquiry and the competition department of the European Commission.

And anyone who criticizes the current direction of the ‘Ring is answered with force. Wilhelm Hahne — the oldest of the racing Hahne brothers (his brother Armin finished 6th last weekend at the track) — had his house searched in June of last year and as recent as last week received again a warning letter from the Nürburgring lawyers for speaking the truth.

It really hurts to get sucked into politics and to witness how they treat the heritage we all love. The worst that could happen is enthusiasts be forced to pay the price of a privateer’s blunder in the form of higher prices or worse.

Please spread the word if you care about Nordschleife and its heritage. Follow ringumbau.de (the documentary community site accompanying the development) and question the information shared by officials.

Michael Frison founded the 20832.com Nurburgring site 10 years ago (ever seen the red-and-white-N logo when at the ‘Ring?). He’s also the person behind the renn.tv movies (you have probably seen Hans Stuck / BMW M3 GTR / Nordschleife Onboard), and donated the engine/idea of the Gixxerkart. He wears a Che Geuvara T-Shirt when he drives the ‘Ring.

There is a good English summary posted to the youtube video:Nürburgring Finanz (Financial) Desaster – SAVE THE RING!

Save The Ring

Just a short summary: Once upon a time there was a famous race track owned by the German state Rheinland Pfalz. Prime minister was Beck, financial minister was Deubel. As Schumania was going down the business went down, too, at the race tra…ck. Of course there was no business at all in the cold season of? the year. So the plan was make the Ring more attractive. The politicians installed Kaffitz as head of the Ring Ltd.

They were planning to go big with some all season entertainment stuff and so on. Looking for an investor they found Richter as an entertainment park inventor – not investor as he states, they must have missed that point! However the? plans look nice with value of 94 mio €. Before of course some other mios had been spent on consultants and money greedy folks. So construction started in 2007. When politica discovered that there was no money behind Richter they supported him with some special financial tricks. Tax payers money went through hidden channels to the Ring all managed by financial minister Deubel. When the buildings where finished (@18:30) the expected visitiors from 150miles away still? stayed away. Nobody’s traveling that far for that bullshit. Same with that SpacePark in Bremen earlier before. Oh wonder: the concept was from nearly the same managers! Early sceptism and critic from natives like Mrs. Schmitz and Mr. Kragl where kept down. Mr. Hahne is a famous and critical journalist, same with him. If this was taking place in southern Italy he would be found under a layer of tarmac I guess.

So it go built and when finished still no private investor was found. Deubel was in contact with that Barandun (@24:20) a Swiss? credit broker. He promised to find investors. The politicians believed in the miracle and even provided 180 mio € for unknown reasons to Swizz guy. He kept them waiting and showed up with some guy DuPont and 67mio €.

Politicians published “Everything solved, private investor found!”. However there was no money. And DuPont ist not from the rich famous chemical dynasty but just a check blackleg. Dumb looking faces of dumb politicians @34:30. Who’s gonna pay for up to now 330mio € for a non working roller coaster, an expensive shopping are and a non visited artificial village that no one wants? Everyone = the tax payer. Welcome to the real life in? Germany. The state took it all over and Richter is head of

The state took it all over, Richter was “rewarded” as becoming new general manager of the Ring. Kaffitz was fired and is now gen.man. of AbuDhabi race track. At? least prosecution department has startes investigations against Kaffitz, Richter and Deubel because of betrayal of confidence and/or beguilement.

Stuttgart. Porsche Motorsport heads into the 2011 racing season in strong form. The works driver squad grows from eight to nine pilots. After his three year training stint as a Porsche Junior, Marco Holzer has now been signed on as a factory pilot. Established pilots Joerg Bergmeister, Timo Bernhard, Romain Dumas, Wolf Henzler, Marc Lieb, Richard Lietz, Patrick Long and Patrick Pilet continue their contracts in 2011.

As part of the “Night of Champions” season-closing celebration in the R&D Centre at Weissach, Wolfgang Dürheimer, Board Member for Research and Development, praised the excellent performance of the Porsche works drivers: “Aside from the technology of the vehicles and the performance of the teams, our pilots contributed significantly to the huge success that we achieved in 2010. They are the ones who had to make the right decisions within fractions of seconds and deliver their best performances in our cars over many hours.”

Two Porsche factory pilots received special distinctions in the 2010 season. Timo Bernhard, the first to win the world’s four major long distance races and hence the Motorsport Grand Slam, was selected by a jury of experts as the ADAC Race Driver of the Year. Richard Lietz, who won the GT2 classification at the Le Mans 24 Hours as well as the championship title of the Le Mans Series, received the Austrian Race Driver of the Year award by the Austrian Motorsport Association committee (OSK).

In his speech, Dürheimer stressed the special role of motorsport for the future of the automobile: “Right now, motor racing has the historic chance to take the lead in important technological advances. Fielding the Porsche 911 GT3 R Hybrid, we have shown how you put crucial ground-breaking technology to the test with success on the race circuit. We will continue to determinedly blaze a trail and we believe that sooner or later other manufacturers will follow suit. But to do this you need courageous and visionary rule-makers who recognise this opportunity and, in conjunction with manufacturers, implement the new challenges in a clear, stable and long term system of regulations.”

Furthermore, Dürheimer applauded the impressive career of the RS Spyder sports prototype. After a total of 12 championship titles, 13 overall and 35 class victories in the American Le Mans Series, the Le Mans Series and at Le Mans, the RS Spyder programme was concluded as planned.

Matthias Müller, Chairman of the Executive Board of Porsche AG, accentuated the special position in international customer sport: “30,000 racing victories, more than 500 teams throughout the world and over 2,000 units of the 911 GT3 Cup produced – such numbers are unparalleled anywhere on earth. Every Porsche carries racing genes. And these genes will also be present in the Porsche models that we develop in the future. Because these vehicles are the basis for the race cars that will bring home victories in the future in the hands of our customer teams worldwide.”
