Victory at Long Beach!

Long and Bergmeister Win at Long Beach – 2nd Straight Year
Patrick Long and Jörg Bergmeister teamed to take a spectacular victory at the Tequila Patrón American Le Mans Series at Long Beach Saturday, after Long drove a blistering stint and raised himself from 3rd in class to 1st with two well-executed passes.  Bergmeister started the race in the #45 Flying Lizard Porsche 911 GT3 RSR, fought through intense traffic and handed the car off to Patrick in 4th.

LBGP Pit Wall

Heavy traffic – a record 36 entries started the race on the tight, sinuous street course – was a major factor in every team’s race. During the race’s only round of pit stops, the two BMW M3s of Rahal Letterman Racing opted not to take fresh tires. Flying Lizard’s strategists showed extreme confidence in their over-the-wall mechanics, and their gamble paid off as Long beat the previously leading Falken Porsche and 2nd placed Risi Ferrari out of the pits, giving him fresh tires to chase down the now-leading BMW duo. Within two laps, Long had passed Joey Hand for 2nd position, and with 10 minutes left in the race, passed Tommy Milner for the lead.

The victory makes it five consecutive podium finishes for Patrick at Long Beach, and two straight wins. Bergmeister and Long are now tied for the GT championship lead with Jaime Melo and Gimmi Bruni of Risi Ferrari; Patrick and Jörg have now amassed 16 ALMS victories together.  The # 45 Porsche also won the Michelin Green X Challenge for the GT entry operating at the highest efficiency with the lowest environmental impact.

Patrick said, “Winning at Long Beach is just an unbelievable result. It’s always spectacular racing at my home track, where I’ve been coming since I was a kid. There’s just something about the energy and the vibe that make it such a special race. The second half of the race started with the Lizard boys absolutely nailing it in the pits – we left nothing on the table with that effort. We were able to overtake the Falken Porsche, the Risi Ferrari and the leading Corvette in the pits. From there, it was about getting past the BMWs, who were very quick on the straight but didn’t take tires in their pit stop.”

LBGP Pit Wall

He continued, “In the end, I got past Joey Hand in traffic to get into 2nd, and had to make an aggressive move on Tommy Milner to take the lead. Then I was able to pull clear, and by the time the Corvette had got past Milner’s BMW, I was far enough down the track that he wasn’t able to catch me before the checkered flag. We’re excited to be tied for the championship now, and all in all, it was just a fantastic weekend. I’m looking forward to being at the LMS race at Spa in Belgium here in a couple of weeks, and then of course up to Laguna Seca for round 3 of the ALMS.”

Porsche Carrera Cup GB Porsche Experience TV

http://www.youtube.com/v/Pa3IYkUmABc&hl=en&fs=1

Porsche Carrera Cup Great Britain In 2010, the Porsche Carrera Cup GB will again be one of the most important and prestigious race championships in Britain and will be a major support race to the MSA British Touring Car Championship.

The new season will be the eighth year of Carrera Cup in Britain, modelled on Porsche’s long-established world-wide Carrera Cup concept. Equal cars, close and exciting racing and first-class facilities for teams and drivers all add to the strength of the championship. The 911 GT3 Cup car, introduced for the start of the 2008 season, offers drivers a mighty 420bhp, a sequential gearbox and a superb chassis. It is a purpose-built thoroughbred racer.

The successful pro-am1 category ensures that the less-experienced and non-professional racers can compete for their own points and prize money within the overall championship. Meanwhile, the pro-am2 category caters for 2006 and 2007 model cars and offers series newcomers the chance to sample the Carrera Cup on a restricted budget. In total, the championship prize fund is almost £100,000.

At the end of the season, three road-going 911s will be presented as the overall champion, the pro-am1 champion and the winning team principal in the team championship will all win the use of a Porsche 911 road car for a year. Supporting the Carrera Cup GB will be an excellent TV package, with races covered in detail in a new series of ‘Motorsport UK’, which will be screened on ITV4 and ITV1.

In addition, a number of races will feature within the extended live ITV4 coverage of BTCC race days. In the grid in 2010 representing the Carrera Cup GB Scholarship will be Michael Meadows and Euan Hankey, who both £50,000 towards their Carrera Cup season in the annual Scholarship programme.

Porsche – Carrera GT: Porsche Experience TV

http://www.youtube.com/v/pb6jAi1A0yg&hl=en_US&fs=1&color1=0x3a3a3a&color2=0x999999&hd=1&border=1

Porsche April 12, 2010 Experience the epic power and performance of this iconic Porsche. Watch the awe-inspiring Carrera GT being put to the test at the Porsche Experience Centre at Silverstone as its raw performance and breathtaking dynamics are fully explored.

The Porsche Carrera GT (Project Code 980) is a mid-engined sports car that was manufactured by Porsche in Leipzig, Germany.

The Carrera GT is powered by a 5.7 litre V10 engine producing 612 DIN (605 SAE) horsepower (450 kW), whereas the original concept car featured a 5.5 litre version rated at 558 hp (416 kW). Porsche claims it will accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h (62.1 mph) in 3.9 seconds and has a maximum speed of 330 km/h (205 mph), although road tests indicated that in reality the car can accelerate from 0-60 mph (97 km/h) in 3.5 seconds and 0-100 mph (160 km/h) in 6.8 seconds, while 0-125 mph (201 km/h) in 9.9 seconds.

The Carrera GT has a basic five colour paint scheme which includes Guards Red, Fayence Yellow, Basalt Black, GT Silver and Seal Grey. Custom colours were also available from the factory. A traditional six-speed manual transmission is the only available transmission. Attached to this gearbox is a beechwood gearknob which pays homage to the wooden gearknob used in the Porsche 917 Le Mans racers.

In its second year of production, a limited edition carbon fibre knob was also made available. The Carrera GT has large side inlets and air dams that help cool the large V10 engine framed by the carbon fibre rear bonnet. Fitted with Porsche’s latest Carbon fibre-reinforced Silicon Carbide (C/SiC) ceramic composite brake system, the 15-inch (380 mm) SGL Carbon disc brakes make an impressive appearance underneath the 19 inch front and 20 inch rear wheels.

Similar to other Porsche models, such as the 911, the GT includes an automated rear wing spoiler which deploys above 70 mph (110 km/h). The interior is fitted with soft leather. Bose audio system and navigation systems are available as options. In typical Porsche fashion, the ignition is to the left of the steering wheel.

This placement dates back to the early days of Le Mans racing when drivers were required to make a running start, hop into their cars, start them and begin the race. The placement of the ignition enabled the driver to start the car with his left hand and put it in gear with his right. Notable technology includes a pure carbon fiber monocoque and subframe, dry sump lubrication and inboard suspension.

The carbon fiber monocoque and subframe were produced and assembled by ATR Composites Group of Italy. The spoiler of the Carrera GT extends into the air when the car reaches about 70 miles (110 km) an hour and evens out the air flow, which causes less drag. The Carrera GT radiator is about five times the size of a 911 Turbo’s. Front and rear suspension consist of pushrod activated shock absorbers and dampers with front and rear anti-roll bars.

Customized 1978 Porsche 911 – Paul Begg, Car Designer, built the ‘RAW-sche’

Have you seen the ‘Rawsche’?

It’s not every day that you see an alcohol manufacturer getting involved with four wheeled projects. However the Australian brewery VB Raw had taken on a rather unique approach to tuning with designer, Paul Begg, by stripping a classic 1978 Porsche 911 down to bare sheet metal before rebuilding it into a one of a kind rolling masterpiece that they called the ’Rawsche’.

Everything from the modern headlamps sourced from a 993 to the classic grill over the flat six from an old 356 is pure Porsche.

What do you get when you strip back a classic 1978 Porsche 911 and rebuild it into a one-of-a-kind marvel? That’d be the ‘Rawsche’, so dubbed for its affiliation with the fresh Australian beer VB Raw.

The Rawsche was rebuilt via a live webcam on vbraw.com.au at the end of 2009, and was given away to one lucky viewer who best displayed their allegiation to the Raw cause. Which was won by Shane Nelson.

As a fond farewell to the shiny silver friend, VB Raw have put together a short video that documents the Porsche rebuild project. Thought you’d be interested in taking a look at what Paul Begg, car designer did to the 1978 classic.

http://www.youtube.com/v/f5meh1wr9XQ&hl=en_US&fs=1&border=1

About Paul Begg

The man behind the rebuild was Paul Begg. He’s an artist and designer whose style is streamlining – knocking the corners off and getting back to organic roots. You can see some of his other stuff here: http://www.flowstudio.com./

Stripping things back to their bare beauty is something the VB Raw team had in mind when it made VB Raw, a new easy-drinking dry lager that’s brewed from nothing artificial. The guys stripped the beer back to just four simple ingredients, creating a fresh tasting, easy drinking beer. By giving the Porsche the ‘Raw’ treatment, Paul achieved his desired end result – taking the car back to its ‘Raw’ basics, stripping back everything superficial and creating a totally unique car.

The key mods he made were:

  • A rounded bumper in composite fibre
  • A custom alloy valance that shows off a GT3 style muffler
  • Old school race seats in alloy with leather cushions
  • A colour combination of ‘House of Kolor’ silver, mat black and polished alloy body panels

Check out VB Raw

The Marin Sonoma Concours
–by Kurt Fischer, PCA Redwood Region past president
http://marinsonomaconcours.org/marin…org/index.html

I am only fixated on one thing now until after May 16, 2010 and that is the Marin-Sonoma Concours d’ Elegance and the Redwood Region’s participation in the biggest Porsche event in all of Zone 7 for 2010.

We have three categories of events that you can partake in…
1. We are still looking for the best of the best in Porsches for the Concours itself. We will be using the PCA Zone 7 Concours rules for “street” class, which covers everything except the chassis and underpinnings in these classes; 356, 911’s to 1973 and newly added 912’s and 914’s to 1976 along with Porsche race cars of any year! If you have that fine car or know of someone who has one…please go to this link!
2. On Saturday, May 15, 2010, we have “The Drive” which starts in Mill Valley with a continental breakfast and after a 2 + hour spirited drive on the back roads of Marin and Sonoma Counties ends up with a gourmet lunch at the Rockin H Ranch situated on the Petaluma River. The cost for this event is $40.00 per person. We are allotted 75 cars or 150 people on the first come basis! We already have over 60 people on this tour, so do not get left behind. Get your application in ASAP. This is for any Porsche, regardless of year! Here is the link for “The Drive”.
3. On Sunday, May 16, 2010 for the Concours, we have about 108 spaces in a special Car Corral Area adjacent to the Concours field and not stuck out with the rest of the “other” cars! Corrals are great places for socializing and general tire kicking of our favorite marque. The cost for the corral is $40.00 per car and that includes 2 admissions to the Concours! Here is the link.
Last year, the Marin-Sonoma Concours d’ Elegance had 180 cars on the field and thousands of visitors for its first year and this year, the field has been expanded to 200 cars. You will not find a better Concours on this side of the Golden Gate Bridge; you name the car and it will be there!
Remember PORSCHE is the featured marque and we will have the iconic Janis Joplin wildly painted 356 there on display along with many other surprises! This Concours is in our own backyard…the Redwood Region and benefits Hospice By the Bay. All events are tax deductible! Please reserve your space now, as these events will fill up fast!
If you have any questions, please click here to email me.
Kurt

Yes, That Is The Porsche 911 GT3 R Hybrid In An NYC Parking Garage – Porsche 911 GT3 R – Jalopnik

Yes, That Is The Porsche 911 GT3 R Hybrid In An NYC Parking Garage

Yes, That Is The Porsche 911 GT3 R Hybrid In An NYC Parking Garage

We’re not going to tell you how it got there. We’re not even going to tell you why it wasn’t on the New York Auto Show floor. But we will tell you about the awesome techno-marvel that is its flywheel.

What’s the awesome? This is the awesome:

Yes, That Is The Porsche 911 GT3 R Hybrid In An NYC Parking Garage

That, cats and kittens, is the car’s cockpit-mounted flywheel. Porsche calls it an “electrical flywheel power generator.” It is a 40,000-rpm electric motor and generator that serves as the core of the GT3 R H’s “push to pass” system. One electric motor lives at each front wheel; these motors act as generators under braking, charging the flywheel unit whenever the driver applies the brakes. (Yes, we said that a flywheel gets charged with something. Ignore the fuzzy terminology and go with it.) The driver can then direct the power generated — up to 120 kilowatts, or 60 kilowatts per front motor — to the front wheels at will.

As we noted earlier, Porsche claims that the project’s focus is

“…not on the 911 GT3 R Hybrid winning the race, but rather spearheading technology as a ‘racing lab.’ The intent is to provide hands-on know-how for the subsequent use of hybrid technology in road-going sports cars.”

We were initially skeptical, but frankly, it’s hard to not get geeky over something like this. Seeing it in person just sets off internal alarms: Big technogoofy cockpit thing! Lots of heavy-gauge wire! Kind of looks like a flux capacitor! IT’S THE LIBYANS! STUTTGARTERS! WOO!

Ahem. But yeah, we found it in a New York parking garage. And yes, that is a Corvette Grand Sport sitting next to it. Cool, eh?

Megafactories – Behind the scenes at the Porsche factory at Stuttgart Germany

Documentary showing how the Porsche 911 is made at Porsche’s megafactory in Stuttgart Germany. Manufacturing speed and style, the Porsche factory in Stuttgart is where many drivers’ dreams come true. Venture inside and discover how this iconic sports car is made.

Ferdinand Porsche was a self-taught automotive designer and engineer. In 1900, at the age of 25, he designed the first hybrid gasoline-electric car for an Austrian company. Then in the ‘30s he sold the German government on his dream of a small, simple car that would be affordable for the masses. That car became the Volkswagen Beetle.

http://www.youtube.com/v/uGVkyGCmEOs&hl=en_US&fs=1&

Post-war shortages forced Porsche to use components from the Volkswagen Beetle – the rear-mounted, air-cooled four-cylinder engine, the gear box and the suspension – to realize his next car. The car that emerged in 1948 was the Porsche 356. More than 75,000 were made over the course of 15 years.

Since 1964, every 911 ever built has been made at Porsche’s factory in Stuttgart, Germany. The factory produces around 40 Boxters, about 110 Porsche 911s and approximately 500 engines daily. Porsche builds 16 versions of the Porsche 911, including the 911 GT3 which delivers 435 horsepower.

Each 911 has around 5,000 welds. Over 4 decades, the design of the 911 has been updated just five times – resulting in six generations.

The most popular colours for a Porsche are black, white and red, but Porsche can custom paint a car any colour (for a fee). The plant makes more than 20 different versions of its 6-cylinder engine ranging from 255 to 535 horsepower.

Nürburgring 24 hour race: Strong driver line-up for Eifel marathon

joerg_bergmeister.jpgThe countdown to the Nürburgring 24 hour race is on. Porsche teams use the first round of the Nürburgring Long Distance Championship on the 27 March to prepare for the marathon on the circuit in Germany’s Eifel region.
Working particularly hard is title defender, Manthey Racing: Porsche works drivers Timo Bernhard and Marc Lieb from Germany as well as Manthey pilot Marcel Tiemann (Monaco) share driving duties in the cockpit of the new Porsche 911 GT3 R at its race debut. The fourth man to join the squad at the 24 hour race on 15 May is, like last year, Romain Dumas (France).
Also awaited with anticipation is the racing premiere of the Porsche 911 GT3 R Hybrid which retrieves energy during braking and stores it in an electric flywheel.
Porsche works drivers Jörg Bergmeister (Germany), Richard Lietz (Austria), Porsche junior Marco Holzer (Germany) and the former Porsche junior Martin Ragginger (Austria) will pilot the vehicle at the 24 hour race. At the test race this coming weekend, Bergmeister, Lietz and Ragginger share the cockpit. “For me it’s always something special to race in Germany,” admits Bergmeister, who normally competes in a Porsche 911 GT3 RSR in the American Le Mans Series. “We’ll gain a huge amount of knowledge at the season-opener of the long distance championship and this should help us to understand the new hybrid system even better and to further develop the car in time for the 24 hour race.”
After 17 years, Germany’s double world rally champion, Walter Röhrl, makes his racing comeback at the season-opening round of the long distance championship. Joining him at the wheel of a standard Porsche 911 GT3 RS for the Nürburgring 24 hour race is DTM legend Roland Asch (Germany) as well as journalists Horst von Saurma-Jeltsch (Germany) and Chris Harris (Great Britain). “I’m very much looking forward to contesting a race again,” says Röhrl. “But the emphasis this weekend will be on gathering as much experience with the car as possible under real racing conditions.”
Round one of the Nürburgring Long Distance Championship takes off on 27 March at midday and runs over a distance of four hours.

First test run of the 2010 Porsche 911 GT3 RS at the Nurburgring…in preparation for 24 hr

Chris Harris was at the Nurburgring this last weekend for a first test in the Porsche 911 GT3 RS that he will race with Walter Röhrl at the Nurburgring 24hr…May 15th and 16th.

“So it all begins today. Test started at 10am. This is the GT3 RS: standard car on slick tyres. VERY EXCITED.” — Chris Harris

“It’s even got a number plate!” — Chris Harris

“…shares a garage with the Manthay GT3R” — Chris Harris

“GT3 R Hybrid has the most bizarre front camber setting ever. Seems to be very quick too.” — Chris Harris

Porsche ambassador and test driver – and double World Rally Champion – Walter Röhrl will compete in the Nürburgring 24 hour race in Germany on May 15/16 in a Porsche 911 GT3 RS, and British motoring journalist and race driver Chris Harris will be joining the German motor sport legend in the Porsche factory-supported team.

In a driver line-up that mixes youth with experience, 35-year old Chris will be sharing the driving with Röhrl (63) and also former German Touring Car Championship driver Roland Asch (59) and fellow motoring writer Horst von Saurma (55). All drivers know the Nürburgring Nordschleife like the backs of their hands and have contested Germany’s greatest long distance motor race several times.

2007 in the cockpit of a Porsche 911 GT3 Cup race car. During the 2008 season, Harris finished in tenth place with a 911 at the Nürburgring long distance championship (VLN). His 911 racing experience also includes two guest appearances in the Porsche Carrera Cup Great Britain, where he scored sixth and seventh place finishes.

“I am thrilled and honoured at the prospect not only of representing Porsche in this great race but also driving alongside Walter Röhrl, a driver who has been a hero of mine for many years,” said Chris, who is preparing for the endurance race with the assistance of the Porsche Human Performance Centre at Silverstone.

Double German Touring Car vice-champion Roland Asch has tackled the 24 hour event in the Eifel Mountains more than a dozen times. In 2004 he secured fifth overall. The foundation for Asch’s career was laid in Porsche single marque race championships. Contesting the Porsche 944 Turbo Cup, the German proved to be virtually unbeatable, winning the Championship three times straight. In 1991, he claimed the Championship title of the Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland. Already in the 2010 season, Asch has a race track marathon behind him, contesting the Dubai 24 hour race where he fought long and hard for the lead at the wheel of a Porsche 911 GT3 Cup, until his retirement.

At his debut race in 1987, Horst von Saurma was Asch’s teammate in the 944 Turbo Cup. It didn’t take long for the Nürburgring-Nordschleife to become the favourite circuit of the Editor-in-Chief of the specialist motoring magazine Sport Auto. Since 1988, von Saurma has contested the 24 hour classic twenty times. In 2001, the 55-year-old shared the cockpit of a Porsche 911 GT3 R with a line-up that included Porsche works driver Timo Bernhard. As a journalist, he regularly conducts tests on the Nordschleife and in 2004 even set a lap record with a Porsche Carrera GT.

In preparation for the 24 hour marathon, Röhrl and his fellow racers aim to contest two VLN races with their 450 hp Porsche 911 GT3 RS. “I’m sure we will quickly familiarise ourselves with the track and the car,” said a confident Röhrl, who last raced in the Nurburgring 24 Hours in 1993. “We’ll need to practice our pit stops. After all, it was 17 years ago that I last made a driver change at race speed.”
