Greetings Dede, Daniel and all Porsche enthusiasts,
Great recap story on 917-021, a tremendous restoration project and video capture, congratulations Daniel. Perhaps I can add some additional historical race information after the controversial remake of 917-021 by the Porsche factory, allowing this 917K to live many lives. In appreciation perhaps Tony Adamowicz and that of co driver Mario Casoni can be added to the list of drivers who drove 021
Over its race career, 021 has had a number of different liveries even after its LeMans repair. Its first outing before turning a wheel was Nov 6, 1971 Nine hrs of Kyalami where it wore the Lucky Strike No.4 livery of David Piper’s two car Kyalami entry. It was fitted with a 5 liter engine and David’s ole stand by 917-010 had the 4.5 liter with the No.3. I was assigned to 917-20 after Richard Attwood choose th 917-010. I was honored to receive the Heuer Chronograph watch recipient award for the fast race lap.
Fly slot car has made a wonderfully accurate commemorative model of 917-021 in the Lucky Strike No.4 livery. Check out my race recap story and additional pics of that race on my link: http://www.a2zracer.com/page61.html
Additional 917-021 race history info can be seen in the 917 Porsche book by Reynald Hezard, with forward by Vic Elford. On page 177, 917-021 was also known as “The other Psychedelic 917” having the Green / Purple LeMans Hippy livery and similar livery in Yellow and Red. I believe I was one of the last drivers to have driven 917-021 back in period, as the FIA switched to a 3 liter World Endurance formula for manufacturers.
Co Incidentally, I am the only American driver to have driven the venerable 917K in period, thanks to my friend David Piper allowing me to also race his 917-010 at Monza and Watkins Glen. ck my links at: http://www.a2zracer.com/page25.html and http://www.a2zracer.com/page56.html
Best Regards, Tony Adamowicz
